Mario Yepes

Defenders rarely get nicknames, so when Paris Saint-Germain fans dubbed Mario Yepes "Super Mario," it tells you something real about the man. A towering Colombian centre-back from Cali, he built his reputation on the unglamorous art of stopping attacks rather than scoring goals. I have always had a soft spot for players who earn devotion from the back line, where mistakes are punished and good work goes unnoticed. That he has moved into coaching feels right; the patience and reading of the game that defined him as a player should translate well into teaching the next generation.
