My Take
Martin Amis was English literature's enfant terrible, and I rather loved him for it. Born to a famous novelist father, he could have coasted on pedigree, but instead forged a venomous, dazzling style entirely his own. Money and London Fields crackle with satire and moral disgust at modern excess, and his nerve in confronting the Holocaust in The Zone of Interest only confirmed his appetite for difficult subjects. He divided readers, but that was the point; he was always picking a fight with his era. Since his death in 2023, I miss that biting intelligence. Few writers were so unafraid to be disliked.
