My Take

Martina Big is one of the most polarizing figures I have ever had to write about, and I refuse to flatten her into a punchline. A German model who radically altered her body through implants and perma-tanning, and who now identifies as Black, she provokes strong reactions for obvious reasons. What strikes me is the sheer conviction. Whatever you make of her choices, she has absorbed enormous public criticism and kept insisting on her own self-image. I do not have to endorse it to find it worth documenting. She is a raw, uncomfortable case study in how far a person will go to define themselves.
