My Take
Mary Elizabeth Ellis is, in my view, a master of the deeply weird supporting role. The Mississippi-born, SMU-trained actress is unforgettable as The Waitress in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, holding a deadpan center inside one of comedy's most chaotic ensembles. That is harder than it looks. Her turns in New Girl and Santa Clarita Diet confirm a performer who flavors a project rather than dominates it. I find that kind of actor more interesting than the lead, the one whose presence quietly decides whether a scene works. That she also directs only deepens my appreciation of her range.
