Mary Hopkin

Mary Hopkin holds a special place for me as the voice behind 1968's "Those Were the Days," that crystalline Welsh tone that went straight to number one. Being one of the very first artists signed to the Beatles' Apple label, discovered in the orbit of Paul McCartney, put her at the heart of an extraordinary cultural moment. What I love is that she never chased trends; her folk-tinged melancholy suited that warm, grounded voice perfectly. Her legacy isn't a sprawling discography but something rarer: a single song that captured hearts worldwide and still aches with nostalgia decades later.
