Masahiko Nishimura

Masahiko Nishimura won a newcomer award in 1997 and a Blue Ribbon for best supporting actor the very next year, which tells you the important thing about him: he was not discovered young. He came out of Toyama, went through Toyo University, and put in years of stage work before television caught up. What I love is how little he appears to be doing. Hand him a scene as a put-upon subordinate getting chewed out by his boss and you cannot look anywhere else in the frame. That timing is not something you can manufacture. He later adjusted how he writes his given name, a quiet tweak rather than a reinvention, which feels entirely in character. Actors like this hold a whole production together from its edges.
