My Take

To me, Masahiro Chono was never just a strong wrestler; he was a master of atmosphere. American-born but quintessentially Japanese, he gave 26 years to New Japan Pro-Wrestling and led nWo Japan and Team 2000 as the promotion's defining heel, his yakuza-inspired persona able to freeze an entire arena. His Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame induction feels almost understated for what he accomplished. I am fascinated by performers who turn villainy into an art form, bending the crowd's emotions entirely to their will. Chono did exactly that, and decades on, that menacing command still gives me chills.
