My Take
Standing 187cm tall and drafted by the Hanshin Tigers straight out of Fukuoka — that backstory already has a certain cinematic pull to it. Nakatani spent years grinding in the Tigers system before his 2017 season finally gave everyone a reason to pay attention: 20 home runs, 61 RBI, the kind of numbers that made you think this guy was just getting started. A right-handed power bat in that lineup was genuinely exciting. Then the arc bent, as arcs tend to do in baseball — a move to the SoftBank Hawks, never quite recapturing that peak, and a retirement announced in January 2023, just after he turned 30. There's something a little bittersweet about that, but honestly, one breakout season at the top level is more than most dreamers from a small Fukuoka town ever get. I respect the journey more than the stat line.
