Masami Okui

Masami Okui came out of Itami in Hyogo and the Osaka University of Arts, and she started her professional life at twenty-one singing backup at concerts, which is about as unglamorous an entry point as the music business offers. From nearly the beginning, though, her work was tied to anime, singing themes for television series and films. That is the part of her resume most people know. The part I find more telling is that she is credited not only as a singer but as a composer and lyricist. Anime theme vocalists are often treated as interpreters, handed a song and asked to sell it. Okui has been on the writing side of the process too, which changes the relationship between the voice and the words entirely. When a performer has authored the line she is belting, the intensity is not a stylistic choice, it is structural. Born in 1966 and still recording, she has stayed near the front of a genre that churns through talent at a brutal rate. Longevity like that is not explainable by ability alone; it looks like appetite.
