My Take
Matt Lucas is one of those performers where you either grew up on him or you came to him late through something like Wonka and then scrambled to catch up — and either way, you end up a fan. Little Britain with David Walliams was genuinely transgressive British sketch comedy, the kind that made you laugh and then feel slightly bad about it, which is honestly a skill. Lucas has this uncanny ability to disappear into characters who are completely absurd yet weirdly human. What I find impressive is that he didn't coast on that success — he kept showing up in unexpected places, from Doctor Who to The Great British Bake Off to a Hollywood musical. University of Bristol educated, International Emmy winner, honorary Doctor of Letters — the man has range. He strikes me as someone who's always the most interesting person in any room he's in, even when he's playing an absolute idiot.
