My Take
Matthew Macfadyen fascinates me because he holds two completely different claims to immortality. For one generation he is the definitive brooding Mr. Darcy; for another he is Tom Wambsgans, the most exquisitely pathetic social climber television has ever produced. That both performances come from the same actor says everything about his range. The Emmys and BAFTAs confirm what the work already shows: stage-trained control, comic timing hidden inside dramatic precision, and zero vanity about looking foolish. He never seems to chase fame, only parts, which may be why every role lands. I genuinely cannot predict his next move, and I love that.
