MC Jin

MC Jin earns my respect for arriving early and refusing to apologise for who he was. As the first Asian American solo rapper signed to a major US label, he stepped into freestyle battles where he was the obvious outsider and won on wordplay alone. From Miami to acting, singing, songwriting, and a later career in Hong Kong, he kept reinventing himself while carrying his heritage openly. What moves me is the courage it took to claim space in hip-hop before that door was anywhere near open. Representation rarely comes without someone willing to go first, and he did.
