Mel Hall

Mel Hall is a name that resonates differently depending on which side of the Pacific you watch baseball from. After a long MLB run with the Cubs, Indians, and Yankees through the 1980s and early 1990s, he crossed over to Japan with the Chiba Lotte Marines and Chunichi Dragons. What interests me is that willingness to leave a familiar league and test himself in an entirely different baseball culture. Adapting your game to Nippon Professional Baseball is no small thing, and players who embrace that challenge rather than coast on past credentials always catch my attention as students of the sport.
