My Take

What I admire about Mel Harris is her gift for vanishing into ordinary people. Her Hope Steadman on Thirtysomething felt less like a performance and more like eavesdropping on a real life, which is far harder than it looks. Coming out of the steel town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and earning a 1992 Theatre World Award, she struck me as an actor whose strength lies in restraint rather than spectacle. I tend to prize performers who make the quiet moments land, and Harris does exactly that. Careers built on truthfulness like hers tend to age the best.
