Melissa Fumero

For me, Melissa Fumero will always be Amy Santiago first, that gloriously type-A overachiever from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But the path there is what earns my respect: a Lyndhurst, New Jersey kid who trained at NYU's Tisch, paid her dues in soap operas, and grinded through bit parts before landing a role that fit like a glove. What I love is her comic timing inside a buttoned-up character, finding laughs in earnestness rather than mugging for them. That she has since branched into voice work and directing shows real range and ambition. As a Latina actor carving out space in network comedy, she's quietly admirable.
