My Take

For me, Mesut Özil is the closest football came to a magician with a passing range. Born in Gelsenkirchen to a Turkish family, he used a slight 180 cm frame and an almost telepathic vision to thread one pass that could teleport a teammate in front of goal. He was, at his peak, among the finest playmakers of his generation, the rare number ten who created rather than scored. The Bambi and UEFA Team of the Year nods are nice, but I love the quiet of the moment he lifted his head and released the ball. That stillness was his genius.
