Michael Howard

Michael Howard strikes me as the model of the lawyer-turned-statesman. From Gorseinon in Wales he built a serious legal career, taking silk as a King's Counsel in 1982, before serving in the cabinets of both Thatcher and Major as Employment, Environment, and Home Secretary, then leading the Conservative Party. What I admire is the combination of forensic legal discipline and the stamina to survive frontline politics for decades. He is not a flashy figure, but the steady climb from a small Welsh town to the edge of national leadership reflects a rigorous, principled mind that I find genuinely impressive.
