My Take

For me, Michael Jordan is the cleanest answer to the question of what greatness actually requires. His 1988 season, taking MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same year, tells you he refused to dominate on only one end of the floor. What I respect even more is the restlessness: walking away at his peak to attempt professional baseball, then returning to win again, then building a business empire after basketball. That competitiveness could never be switched off, and it made him exhausting to play against and irresistible to watch. Every superstar since has been measured against the template he set.
