My Take

What pulls me to Michael Redmond is how he made himself the exception in a game that almost never produces one. Go's deepest waters run through China, Korea, and Japan, yet this Californian crossed the Pacific and climbed all the way to 9-dan, the only Westerner ever to hold the top rank. I think that says less about talent alone and more about decades of stubborn immersion in a culture not his own. To me he's quietly remarkable: not a celebrity in the loud sense, but proof that mastery sometimes means leaving everything familiar behind and outworking a tradition on its home ground.
