My Take
Mick Jones is, for me, the sound of the Clash itself, that ringing, restless guitar at the center of punk's most ambitious band. The split with Joe Strummer always struck me as a genuine tragedy, two huge talents who could not hold it together. But what I respect most is what came after: Big Audio Dynamite, mixing dance and rock years before it was fashionable. Jones was always the curious, forward-looking one, anger and intelligence in equal measure. Put on London Calling and you hear a guitarist who was never content to repeat himself. He stayed sharp, and that earns my lasting admiration.
