My Take
Mick Taylor is, to me, the most underrated craftsman of the Rolling Stones era. Plucked from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as a barely-twenty prodigy, he gave Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. a fluid, lyrical sophistication that contrasted beautifully with Keith Richards' raw groove. His solos breathe in a way that few in rock ever matched. That he walked away in 1974, before he had to, only adds to the mystique. Those few golden years were enough to secure his place. I think of him as proof that brilliance is measured in moments, not tenure.
