Michu

Michu fascinates me as a reminder that brilliance can arrive late and burn bright. Born Miguel Pérez Cuesta in Oviedo in 1986, he rose through Real Oviedo and bounced around Spain before exploding into wider view in the Premier League. Tall yet technically gifted, he could both score and link play, a forward who thought like a midfielder. Injuries cruelly shortened his peak, which makes that dazzling spell feel even more precious. I am especially drawn to his move into football management as director of football at Burgos. There is something deeply likeable about a player who stays in the game after the boots come off.
