My Take

Mike G intrigues me precisely because the record is sparse. A Los Angeles rapper out of Crenshaw High, he carries a pedigree that needs little explanation: that part of the city is where music and street life run as one, and the words formed there tend to feel earned rather than borrowed. Even the stripped-down stage name reads to me as a statement of plainspoken confidence.
