Mikijirō Hira

Mikijirō Hira had a voice you don't forget — a stage instrument that could fill a hall without seeming to strain. Born in Hiroshima in 1933, he began on stage in the 1950s and moved into film and television without ever really leaving the theatre behind. From the 1970s he became a central presence in Yukio Ninagawa's productions, and his Macbeth is the performance most often cited when people talk about him. The honours are there: the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1998, the Kikuta Kazuo Drama Award, the Golden Arrow Award. But the detail that stays with me isn't on the awards list. He was still working when he died in 2016, at eighty-two. Not making appearances, not doing a farewell tour — working. Plenty of actors of his generation eased into elder-statesman roles and let the stage go. He treated performing as something you simply keep doing until you can't. That's a rarer kind of career than any single acclaimed role.
