My Take
Mirai Moriyama is one of those performers I can never file neatly. Born in Kobe in 1984, he won a Blue Ribbon newcomer prize while barely into his twenties, and the obvious move from there was a comfortable career on Japanese television. He went the other way, toward stage work and contemporary dance, where nothing hides you and the body has to carry everything, and he has taken that work abroad rather than staying safely inside the domestic industry. What I admire is the consistency of the choice: handed an easy lane and a hard one, he keeps taking the hard one. Actor, dancer, neither label quite sits right, which is probably the point.
