Misato Tanaka

Misato Tanaka won the Elan d'or Newcomer of the Year award in 1998. Japanese entertainment hands out that prize every year, and if you tracked the recipients you would find that a great many of them are no longer working. Tanaka is. That continuity, more than the award itself, is what I find worth noting. Born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa in 1977 and a graduate of Hokuriku Gakuin High School, she has spent well over two decades as an actress, with voice work alongside her on-camera roles. I have a particular respect for performers who do both. Voice acting strips away everything an actor can hide behind on screen. There is no face to carry a scene, no physical charisma to paper over a thin reading. If the performance isn't in the voice, there is no performance. Someone who can work in that medium as well as in front of a camera was never coasting on early promise. She got the newcomer award, then quietly spent the following twenty-five years proving it wasn't an accident.
