Mitsuru Manaka

What draws me to Mitsuru Manaka is the route rather than the highlight reel. Born in 1971 in Satte, Saitama, and raised in Ōtawara, Tochigi, he came through Nihon University and played his professional career as an outfielder in Nippon Professional Baseball. Then, in October 2014, he was named manager of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, succeeding Junji Ogawa. The detail that matters to me is what came immediately before: he had been managing the Swallows' farm team. That is a specific kind of promotion. A manager who has spent his time in the minors knows exactly which young player is ready and which one only looks ready, because he watched them fail in front of empty seats. At 170 cm he was never the physically imposing figure, and nothing in his public manner suggests a man who trades on presence. Managing a professional baseball team is a job judged purely on results, which is brutal. But a league where someone can climb that quietly and still reach the top job is a healthier league.
