Nami Tamaki

Anime theme songs are a strange launchpad. The song travels the world; the singer often does not. Nami Tamaki is one of the rare cases where both made it through. She was still a teenager from Wakayama when her voice became attached to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and for a whole generation of fans outside Japan that was the first Japanese pop they ever loved without knowing they were loving Japanese pop. What impresses me is not the debut but the refusal to be frozen by it. Four top-ten albums, two of them at number one, is a real commercial record, not a novelty. And she has since moved into acting, dance and voice work rather than touring the same nostalgia circuit forever. Born in 1988, she has had a long time to become something other than a memory, and she seems to have used it. I would rather follow a career like that than a louder one that peaked in a single year.
