My Take
Nana Tanimura arrived in the late 2000s, right in the middle of a wave of Japanese women singers working in an R&B-inflected pop register, and she worked several lanes at once: recording artist, gravure model, television personality. She was born in Sapporo and raised mainly in Osaka, shuttling to Hawaii as a small child, and she graduated from Aoyama Gakuin University's law faculty; since 2020 she has also worked as a yoga instructor. The part I keep turning over is the double track. In that era it was normal, almost expected, for a young woman signed as a singer to also shoot swimsuit spreads, because the two audiences fed each other commercially. What that arrangement costs the artist is less discussed. Being marketed simultaneously for your voice and your body means every review of the music arrives pre-contaminated by the photographs, and the reverse is true too. Plenty of performers from that moment have since said the balance was harder than it looked. I would rather credit Tanimura for navigating a setup she did not design than judge her by it.
