Naoki Okamoto

Naoki Okamoto is the kind of athlete who makes you rethink what dedication actually looks like. Long-distance running is one of those sports that strips away all the theater; there's nowhere to hide at kilometer 35. What strikes me about Okamoto is his consistency: three straight Hakone Ekiden runs for Meiji, then three years in a row finishing third on the ace fourth stage of the New Year Ekiden. That kind of quiet tells you something. He's here to run, not to perform running. I respect that more than I can explain.
