My Take
Neal Morse strikes me as something like the conscience of modern progressive rock. Founding Spock's Beard with his brother and then assembling the supergroup Transatlantic with heavyweights from Dream Theater, Marillion, and the Flower Kings shows both ambition and the respect of his peers. As a multi-instrumentalist he could easily drown in technique, yet what I value is his devotion to song and story over mere virtuosity. Prog so often slides into the impenetrable; Morse keeps reaching for the listener's heart. Sincere builders like him are exactly why this demanding genre never quite fades away.
