My Take

Neil Finn is, for me, one of songwriting's quiet masters. The Te Awamutu native built Split Enz and Crowded House, and "Don't Dream It's Over" alone would secure his place in pop history. That Radiohead's Ed O'Brien called him music's most prolific writer of great songs says plenty, and his stint in Fleetwood Mac confirmed his standing among peers. With an OBE in 1993 and an honorary doctorate from Waikato, he has the honors too. I prize melody over spectacle, and Finn delivers it consistently. I wish more listeners in Japan knew his work.
