My Take
What strikes me most about Ni Ni is her quiet authority. Bursting onto the scene through Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War, then collecting a Best Newcomer award in 2012, she could have coasted on early fame. Instead she built a career film by film, drama by drama, always seeming to root herself in the spine of a character rather than its surface. Among a crowded generation of Chinese actresses, I find her restraint the most compelling quality. She doesn't chase the spotlight; she lets the work earn it, and that patience is exactly why I keep watching her.
