My Take

Nicolas Cage might be my favorite living wildcard, because I never know which version is showing up and I love all of them. He's an Oscar winner who drank himself into oblivion in Leaving Las Vegas, a riot in the Coen brothers' Raising Arizona, and a perfectly cheesy map-chasing hero in National Treasure, and he plays every single one like his life depends on it. Sure, the internet loves clowning his loudest line readings, but that total lack of vanity is exactly why I trust him. He's a Coppola who refused to coast on the name and built this gloriously strange, genre-hopping career instead. Whether he's barely whispering or completely melting down, the second he's on screen I lean in. The man simply does not do boring.
