Nicolás Otamendi

Otamendi is the sort of defender I have enormous respect for: unglamorous, relentless, and absolutely essential. A Buenos Aires-born centre-back who captained Benfica and logged years of hard-nosed service for Argentina, he embodies the thankless art of protecting the back line. His move to River Plate, where he is now captain, reads like a perfect homecoming, a veteran returning to finish his story where it began. He will never trend for highlight-reel goals, but the players who win things tend to be the ones who do exactly what he does. That is real value.
