My Take
For anyone who grew up in Japan, Nobuyo Oyama's voice is not a performance credit, it is a childhood. She played Doraemon, a robot cat, for twenty-six years, and it never once sounded like an adult woman doing an impression of a boy. That is the strange alchemy of great voice acting: the actor disappears and the character becomes the only version anyone will accept. Plenty of roles get recast. Hers, really, never could be. What I find most human about her is the range around it, a stage and screen actress, a singer, and a cookbook writer, as if one iconic role was never going to be enough to contain her. She faced illness openly in her later years and died in September 2024. Some debts you can only repay by saying thank you.
