My Take
Nobuyuki Anzai is one of those mangaka who quietly shaped a generation of Shonen Sunday readers without ever quite getting the mainstream recognition he deserved. Flame of Recca ran through most of the nineties and hit that sweet spot of tournament-style action, elemental powers, and genuinely lovable characters that made it a staple for anyone who grew up flipping through Weekly Shonen Sunday. Then he pulled a full pivot with MÄR — lighter, fairy-tale flavored, almost playful in tone — which showed he had more range than a one-trick action guy. If you slept on Flame of Recca, it holds up better than you'd expect.
