Nobuyuki Okumura

Nobuyuki Okumura's story is one of those baseball lives that quietly earns your respect the more you learn about it. A kid from Konan City on Lake Biwa's doorstep, he made it to Koshien with Nihon Daigaku Yamagata and homered there. Then he got drafted by the Giants in 2013, and barely had his NPB rookie card warm before he became the youngest free-agent compensation player in league history at just 19 — shipped off to Yakult before he'd really gotten started. A rougher start is hard to imagine, and yet he carved out a decade with the Swallows as exactly the kind of guy a clubhouse runs on: versatile infielder, energy guy, someone who makes the roster tighter just by being in it. Not a name you see on highlight reels, but take him out and you feel it. That's a career worth something.
