Katsura Hoshino

I've got a real soft spot for the quiet ones, and Katsura Hoshino fits the bill: a manga artist from Shiga who'd clearly rather let the work do the talking than wave at a camera. D.Gray-man is her whole personality from where I'm sitting, all that gothic gloom and ornate, melancholy design, the kind of dark fantasy that lingers in your chest. What gets me is the sheer doggedness of it, the way she's kept that heavy, intricate world alive across years of hiatuses and the brutal grind that serialized manga is famous for, health and deadlines and all. I don't know her offstage and honestly I don't need to. She strikes me as a craftsperson carrying something deep and patient, like Shiga's still lake water, and I quietly respect the heck out of that.
