My Take
I hold Nora Ephron in the highest regard as a filmmaker and writer. Raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side, she climbed from journalism to screenwriting and directing, and won the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay in 1990. What sets her apart, in my view, is that she brought genuine intelligence and a sly bite to the romantic comedy, a genre too often dismissed. She wrote smart women who got to stay smart while falling in love, which was rarer than it should have been. Three Academy Award nominations attest to her craft. She passed in 2012, but her scripts still make people smile, and I admire her without reservation.
