Nora Hirano

Nora Hirano, born in Tokyo in October 1978, is a comedian with Watanabe Entertainment, and her real name is Chiaki Hirano. Her act is built around a character from Japan's late-1980s bubble era: shoulder pads, enormous hair, a brick-sized mobile phone. What I find clever is that she was a child during that period, not a participant. She could not be working from memory, which means the detail comes from study rather than nostalgia, and somehow that makes it land harder. The other thing worth naming is the tone. Period parody usually curdles into mockery, with the joke aimed down at people who did not know better. Hers does not do that. It plays as affection for a loud, optimistic moment in Japanese history, and audiences pick that up. The gap between the brash stage name and the warmth of the actual comedy is the whole trick, really.
