Oscar Ruggeri

Ruggeri is my idea of a defender's defender. Anchoring Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning side, the towering centre-back nicknamed El Cabezón won with his head as much as his frame. Two Copa América titles and a Confederations Cup show he delivered when the nation was watching. What I respect most is the journey: from tiny Corral de Bustos in Córdoba to the summit of the world game, pure grit. That he moved into coaching tells me he wanted to hand his winner's mentality to the next generation. I will always favor the unglamorous players who shut games down, and he was a master of it.
