My Take
Pauly Shore is a perfect time capsule of 1990s comedy, that loose, goofy, slacker energy that defined an era of MTV and breezy studio comedies. Raised in a Hollywood comedy family, he had the craft in his blood, started stand-up at seventeen, and rode Encino Man into stardom. Critics often dismissed him as a novelty, but I think that undersells him. Carrying a whole cultural moment on pure charm is harder than it looks, and few could do it. His later move into directing and writing suggests there was always more underneath the goofball. I appreciate performers who fully commit to making a moment laugh.
