My Take

I have a real soft spot for Sadao Watanabe, because the man is basically a living chapter of Japanese jazz history and he wears it lightly. Picture a kid from Utsunomiya, born back in 1933, who fell for the saxophone when jazz was still an exotic import, then actually got on a boat to study at Berklee instead of just dreaming about it. That kind of nerve gets me every time. What I love most is his tone: it's bright, breezy, sunlit, the sound of someone who genuinely adores playing. He's a big reason bossa nova and warm Latin grooves found such a happy home in Japan. And the fact that he kept gigging into his nineties, decorated honors and all, still grinning behind the horn?
