My Take
Pedro Almodóvar is, for my money, one of the few directors whose name alone is a genre. From a small town in Ciudad Real he built a wholly personal cinema of bold colour, melodrama, irreverent wit and unflinching desire. What I love is his refusal to soften his vision for respectability; films like Talk to Her and Law of Desire treat passion, family and identity with both tenderness and provocation. The Cannes and Goya honours are deserved, but they're not what draws me. It's that across decades he never diluted his own palette. That artistic stubbornness is, to me, true greatness.
