Pete Best

Pete Best is one of pop history's great what-ifs, and I never tire of him. Dropped as the Beatles' drummer in 1962, just before the world fell at their feet, he became the original fifth Beatle, the man on the wrong side of the door. What moves me is not the bitterness but the persistence: he kept playing and built a life under his own name. The Casbah Coffee Club his mother ran in Liverpool sits at the very root of the band's story. To me, surviving that kind of near-miss with dignity deserves its own form of respect.
