Petra Haden

Petra Haden treats the human voice like an instrument, and that's exactly why I find her so compelling. Born into a remarkable musical family, daughter of jazz great Charlie Haden and one of three musician triplets, she could have leaned on the name. Instead she pushes into wild territory, layering her own voice to rebuild entire albums a cappella and switching between violin and song with ease. What gets me every time is the way playfulness and total commitment coexist in her work. She experiments like someone who genuinely loves sound, and it shows.
