Philip Ettinger

Philip Ettinger interests me because of the company his roles keep. Breaking through as the tormented activist in Paul Schrader's First Reformed, then playing a younger Mark Ruffalo, signals that serious filmmakers trust him with interior, combustible characters. A start at Emerson College, a BFA from Rutgers' Mason Gross School and that New Jersey grounding fit the impression I get of a meticulous, unshowy actor who builds from the inside out. He is not chasing celebrity; he is chasing the right parts. I think of him as a slow-burn talent, the kind whose filmography you trust before you can name every title, and I am rooting for him.
