R. Balki

R. Balki interests me as a filmmaker who climbed to the very top of advertising before turning to cinema. Born in Kumbakonam and once Group Chairman of Lowe Lintas, he brings the ad world's instinct for sharp, persuasive ideas to bold subjects. Films like Cheeni Kum, Paa and especially Pad Man, which tackled menstrual stigma head-on, show a director using mainstream entertainment to nudge society forward. I'm always drawn to creators who pair commercial craft with genuine purpose. Balki seems to have both, and that combination, done without preaching, is what makes his work worth watching.
