Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers arrived in the major leagues in 2017 at twenty years old and hit almost immediately, which is not how this is supposed to work. A year later he was a World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox. Most careers earn their hardware slowly; his got the biggest prize out of the way before he could legally rent a car in some states. Born in the Dominican Republic's Sánchez Ramírez Province, he became for most of a decade the offensive center of a Boston lineup that changed around him constantly. The Silver Sluggers in 2021 and 2023 and the 2021 All-MLB selection confirm what the eye test already said: the bat is genuinely elite, a compact left-handed swing that produces damage to all fields. His defense has been a persistent talking point, and eventually the designated hitter label followed him. I find that debate less interesting than the fact that a player good enough to hit through it kept playing through it. He is now with the San Francisco Giants, which ends one of the longer single-club identities in recent Red Sox history. Watching him build a second act in a different park is the part I'm curious about.
